Keeping American homes warm in winter was a difficult challenge for more than 300 years, with home heating only becoming a routine convenience in the 20th century. This article discusses the evolution from the primitive and dangerous hearths, to the cookstoves, followed by central heating available at the flick of a switch. It’s one of the “History of Our Homes” series I’ve written for A Simple Life.
