American settlers needed water to survive, often relying on the mysterious act of dowsing to locate underground sources. I’ve been a dowser for many years now, so writing this article was a delight. It explains how and why dowsing ~ or “water witching” as it’s sometimes been called ~ was employed across the country. Nobody can explain exactly how it works, and in this article I avoid some of the stranger, “new age” aspects of dowsing as it’s practiced today.
